Orchidview 2008 Flask list

August 2007

We are pleased to have this plant awarded at Orchid Species Symposium by COS on Aug 12, 2007. This photo does not do this flower justice because our camera could not accurately show its beautiful indigo color.

AOS judges described this flower as "Two flowers and one bud on two inflorescences; flowers deep violet, side lobes white, yellow centrally blushed violet on margins, column violet, darker basally; substance waxy; texture slightly crystalline. "

Also posted is the same plant with black background, where you can see the flower is more flat. The color is wrong on this - but you can see it's more evenly colored than the one before.

Recently we have flowered a few of our seedlings of Phrag. kovachii x besseae and are truly excited about them. This is the first hybrid of Phrag. kovachii that we have seen and it is as good or better than we expected.

We have a limited number of the seedling for sale. Planted in 2 ¼” pots, these are well established with 3” – 4” leaf span for $75. E-mail or call us to place your order.

Phragmipedium kovachii seedlings are now growing in our laboratory.

Although they cannot be sold until May 2007, we are announcing to our customers that we met Mr. Manolo Arias in Miami in August 2005 and took delivery of more than 100 Phrag. kovachii seedlings in flask.

Immediately upon arriving home, the seedlings were transferred to flasks with our standard phragmipedium medium. In only a few days the little seedlings were brighter and beginning to have good color. All our expertise is being utilized to give the plants the best chance for survival and hardiness.

For any of you who are not familiar with the history of Phrag. kovachii, it was first brought into the US by a collector who bought it from a roadside seller in Peru. After all kinds of legal problems, the Peruvian government has allowed two orchid companies to sell flasks that they have produced from very limited stock. We were fortunate enough to buy and have ours included in the first shipment to the US.

The flowers are said to be 18 cm natural spread, enormous for a phragmipedium and to range in color from hot pink to maroon. The pictures were sent to us by Manolo Arias and are being used with his permission.

With no experience in the growing habits of Phrag. kovachii, we have no idea what size the seedlings will be in May 2007 but you can be your bottom dollar that we will be giving them our best try.
